About this project
Simplewall is a lightweight, open-source firewall tool designed for Windows that leverages the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) to configure and control network activity on your computer. Unlike traditional firewall control panels, simplewall works directly with WFP, which is a set of internal APIs and system services that provide a platform for creating network filtering applications.
The application is less than a megabyte in size and is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 and higher operating systems (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11, 64-bit/ARM64). It requires administrator rights to function correctly and can be downloaded as either an installer or portable version.
Key features include:
- A simple interface without annoying pop-ups
- A rules editor for creating custom rules (global rules applied to all applications, and special rules applied to specified applications)
- An internal blocklist to block Windows spy/telemetry
- Dropped packets information with notification and logging to a file (Windows 7+)
- Allowed packets information with logging to a file (Windows 8+)
- Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) support
- Windows Store support (Windows 8+)
- Windows services support
- Localization support
- IPv6 support
The tool supports various rule syntax formats including IP addresses, IP addresses with ports, IP ranges, IP ranges with ports, CIDR notation, ports, and port ranges. Multiple IPs, ports, and hosts can be specified using semicolons.
Simplewall offers two installation modes: permanent rules that work until manually disabled, and temporary rules that reset after the next reboot. It also provides command-line options for enabling filtering, enabling temporary filtering, enabling silent filtering, and removing all installed filters.
The application is free and open source, with GPG signatures provided for binary verification. It includes a public key and fingerprint for users to verify the authenticity of downloads.
