About this project
Fast Script Reload (FSR) is a Unity development tool designed to eliminate the wait for full domain reload and script compilation when making small code changes. It automatically compiles only the modified scripts and hot-reloads them into the current play session, allowing developers to iterate rapidly without re-entering play mode. The tool works with any code editor and supports Windows, Mac (Intel editor version only), and Linux, as well as Unity versions 2019.3, 2020.3, 2021.3, and 2022.2.
Key features include:
- Automatic hot reload of changed code during play mode.
- One-off custom code execution via `OnScriptHotReload()` and `OnScriptHotReloadNoInstance()` methods.
- Experimental support for adding new fields (adjustable in the editor) since version 1.3.
- Editor mode support added in version 1.4.
- Hot reload on device for builds (paid extension asset).
Limitations include: generic methods and classes are not hot-reloaded, new public methods only work as private, nested classes may cause compilation errors, and Mac Silicon editor is not supported. Most limitations can be addressed with User Defined Script Overrides.
The tool is available as a free open-source package on GitHub, with a paid version on the Unity Asset Store. It uses MonoMod and Harmony for runtime code detours. The project includes documentation, a video tutorial, and a Discord community for support.
