About this project
GooseOb's Music Player is a cross-platform desktop music application built with the iced GUI framework in Rust. It supports searching and streaming from YouTube Music, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Last.fm, and MusicBrainz, with yt-dlp handling audio streaming and downloads. Bandcamp streaming uses direct HTTP. Streamed audio is cached to disk for replay, and tracks can be downloaded as MP3.
Local playback supports MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, OPUS, and WMA files. Users can create and organize playlists, save albums/artists/playlists to a library, and browse artist pages with popular tracks, albums, and related artists. Additional features include song and artist radio, a queue panel with Up Next and Recently Played tabs, split-pane views, and drag-and-drop track management.
Lyrics are fetched from LRCLib (no API key) with synced clickable lines, and from Genius with per-line annotations and translations. Users can add custom synced or plain lyrics per track and attach multi-line notes to lines. An AI translation feature supports any OpenAI-compatible server or local Ollama instance to translate lyrics with learner notes.
OS media controls integrate via MPRIS (Linux), SMTC (Windows), and Now Playing (macOS). The app offers volume normalization, search history, session restore, navigation history, a dark theme, and localization in 13 languages. Configuration is stored in JSON and editable through an in-app settings view. Installation is available via a shell script, pre-built releases, or `cargo install goosemusic`. Prerequisites include Rust, yt-dlp, and optionally Python 3 with ytmusicapi for YouTube Music search.
