About this project
Glowstone is a lightweight, open-source Minecraft: Java Edition server implementation written entirely from scratch in Java. Unlike CraftBukkit and similar projects that rely on decompiled Minecraft source code, Glowstone's codebase is completely original, which the project states lowers the barrier to contribution and avoids working around decompiled source.
Key characteristics:
- Plugin compatibility: Supports plugins written for the Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper APIs natively. Plugins that depend on CraftBukkit-specific code (org.bukkit.craftbukkit or net.minecraft.server packages) will not work unless designed to fail gracefully.
- Architecture: Uses a thread-per-world model and performs synchronization only when required by the Bukkit API, aiming for better performance than CraftBukkit in scenarios with many players where exact vanilla functionality is not needed.
- Configuration: Uses config/glowstone.yml as the main configuration file, replacing CraftBukkit's server.properties and bukkit.yml. Settings from those files are copied over during default configuration generation.
- Console: Uses JLine for console input and colored output, which can be disabled for a flat console.
- Dependencies: All dependencies are shaded into the output jar at compile time, so running requires only java -jar glowstone.jar.
The project is not finished; many features work but nothing is guaranteed. It is not produced by the Bukkit team and does not undergo the same testing. The project explicitly does not accept AI-generated pull requests due to legal risk for its clean-room reverse-engineering approach.
Glowstone is released under the MIT license, while its companion API layer Glowkit is released under the GPL. Builds can be obtained from the project website or GitHub releases, and the source can be compiled using Maven via the included build script.
