About this project
geemap is a Python package designed for interactive geospatial analysis and visualization with Google Earth Engine (GEE). It bridges the gap between the GEE Python API and interactive mapping by building on ipyleaflet and ipywidgets, allowing users to analyze and visualize Earth Engine datasets directly within Jupyter-based environments.
Key features include converting Earth Engine JavaScript code to Python scripts and notebooks, displaying Earth Engine data layers on interactive maps, creating split-panel maps, using drawing tools, and retrieving data interactively via an inspector tool. It supports shapefile integration without uploading to GEE, exporting FeatureCollections to formats like shp, csv, json, kml, and kmz, and exporting images as GeoTIFF. Users can extract pixel values into numpy arrays, calculate zonal statistics, add custom legends, create timelapse animations, and perform image classification with accuracy assessment.
The package also provides utilities for searching places and datasets, importing personal assets, publishing interactive maps, and adding local raster data. It is widely used in education and research, with extensive documentation, 360+ notebook examples, and video tutorials available. The project is supported by NASA and is open-source under the MIT license.
