About this project

Notaeo is a free, local-first study and research notebook designed for school use. It lets users collect sources, read them in-app, research the public web, and study with scheduled flashcards, source-grounded quizzes, glossaries, one-page study guides, and mind maps. A one-click demo notebook showcases every workflow. Keyless (no-AI) operation is a first-class design principle: public-web discovery via DDGS, source ingest, search, reading, study tools, and exports all work without any provider key. Accounts are required (free, instant local registration with email + password; Google OAuth planned). Every notebook, source, outline, card, skill, note, and AI key belongs to exactly one user; cross-user access returns 404. Optional AI supports per-user Gemini or OpenRouter keys, and a separate hosted server can offer OpenCode free-model chat. No local LLMs by design. Source ingest supports PDF, DOCX, TXT/MD, and paste with page-aware chunking. Search is ranked with filters, tags, rename, URL ingest, and markdown export. Study tools include scheduled flashcards, grounded drafts, glossary, quiz, study guides, mind maps, and Anki/Obsidian export. A keyless research mode covers plan, web search, gather, and cited source collection. The stack is Python 3.12 + FastAPI + SQLite (WAL) backend managed with uv, and React + TypeScript + Vite + Tailwind CSS frontend. The repo is the complete keyless/no-AI local product; hosted operations (managed sync, subscriptions, hosted AI credits, admin tooling) live in a separate private server repo and are never required here. Desktop support includes a macOS alpha (SwiftUI shell running the local FastAPI backend and React UI over a loopback sidecar, ad-hoc signed for Apple Silicon). Windows desktop is deferred; iOS and Android clients live in a separate repository. The local privacy boundary is loopback-only with per-launch session cookies and email login on every data route. Network use is explicit-only (web search, URL ingest, BYOK AI, Google OAuth) with no implicit sync. License is MIT.
