About this project

First Contributions is an educational repository designed to help first-time contributors make their first open-source contribution. It turns a simple repository into a practice exercise: users fork the repo, clone it, create a branch, add their name to Contributors.md, commit the change, push it, and submit a pull request. Maintainers then merge these practice pull requests, giving beginners a real end-to-end experience of the fork -> clone -> edit -> pull request workflow. The README includes detailed command-line instructions with explanations, troubleshooting notes for common git switch and push errors, and guidance on authentication and SSH setup. It also offers tutorials for GUI tools such as GitHub Desktop, Visual Studio, GitKraken, VS Code, Sourcetree, and IntelliJ IDEA. The project is extensively translated into dozens of languages via files in the docs/translations folder, with language links provided at the top of the README. Additional material covers git workflow scenarios, and a companion web app provides a list of projects with easy issues for continued practice.
