About this project
FinalBurn Neo (FBNeo) is an open-source emulator for arcade games and selected consoles, based on the earlier FinalBurn emulator and old versions of MAME. It targets retro gaming enthusiasts and emulates a broad range of classic arcade hardware, including Capcom CPS-1, CPS-2 and CPS-3, Neo Geo, and Sega System 16, among others. The project emphasizes accurate emulation and high performance, and supports features such as netplay, rewinding, and shader effects. It is a continuation of the FinalBurn and FinalBurn Alpha projects.
Builds and ports: nightly work-in-progress builds are published through GitHub Actions and may occasionally contain incomplete code or crashes, while official releases are also available. A macOS port has separate build instructions and releases, and a LibRetro port is available through RetroArch on many platforms. SDL1.2 and SDL2 builds can be produced with make targets (make sdl and make sdl2), requiring the respective SDL libraries plus GCC, make, perl and nasm.
Contributing: the project welcomes pull requests and other submissions, and maintains a list of known bugs and desired features on its issue tracker. A stated focus is keeping the codebase compilable on older systems, with C++03 compliance as a minimum target. An .editorconfig mandates tabs for indentation with a tab width of four columns, and a sample function illustrates preferred naming and brace style. Portability types such as UINT8, INT8, UINT16, INT16, UINT32, INT32, INT64 and UINT64 are defined for cross-platform work.
Source layout: the src directory separates emulation code (burn, including devices, drivers and sound), frontend code (burner), CPU emulation (cpu), external dependencies (dep), and platform-specific video and sound implementations (intf). New ports are encouraged and can be merged into the main source tree. Issues can be reported on the project GitHub or the Neosource forums. Use of the program and source code is subject to the license conditions in src/license.txt.
