About this project
FEX-Emu provides usermode emulation of x86 and x86-64 binaries on ARM64 Linux systems. It supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications and integrates with Wine/Proton to run Windows games. Key features include forwarding graphics API calls (OpenGL, Vulkan) directly to host libraries to reduce overhead, an experimental code cache that minimizes in-game stuttering, and a per-application configuration system allowing performance tweaks such as skipping costly memory model emulation. A graphical configuration tool (FEXConfig) simplifies managing these settings. FEX requires ARMv8.0+ hardware and an x86-64 root filesystem, which can be fetched automatically for many distributions via the provided FEXRootFSFetcher tool. Installation is streamlined on Ubuntu (22.04 through 25.04) via a PPA script, while other distributions follow a wiki-guided setup. The project is actively developed and tested on Arch, Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu.
