About this project
OpenWork is a free, open-source desktop application designed for sharing AI workflows, positioned as an open-source alternative to Claude Cowork and Codex for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It enables users to add an OpenWork MCP (Model Context Protocol) server to agents like Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, or other compatible tools, allowing them to reuse skills, MCP connections, and connected services (including Google Workspace and Microsoft 365) across different tools, teammates, and machines. The desktop app provides a dedicated workspace, but it is optional; users can operate OpenWork directly from their existing AI agent. For organizations, the admin interface (OpenWork Den) allows publishing capabilities, managing access, and configuring shared or per-user connections.
The OpenWork MCP exposes four tools: `search_capabilities` to find available capabilities, `execute_capability` to run them, and `list_skills`/`get_skill` to list and read skills. Setup instructions are provided for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and any MCP client using the remote URL `https://api.openworklabs.com/mcp/agent`.
OpenWork Den serves as the control plane for team or organizational management, offering features such as inference provisioning at scale, team and member management, desktop policy enforcement, publishing skills and plugins through marketplaces, and importing Agent Plugins or Anthropic-compatible plugins.
The repository uses a directory-split license: everything outside the `ee/` directory is MIT licensed (including the desktop app and core platform), while the `ee/` directory (OpenWork Den) is under the OpenWork EE License, a source-available license. Production use of EE features requires a subscription, but it is free for organizations with up to 5 users, free for 30-day evaluation at any size, and always free for development and testing. Each `ee/` release converts to MIT two years after publication.
For contributors, the project requires Node 24, pnpm 11, and Git with DCO sign-off. The repository layout includes `apps/` for the desktop app (React UI, Electron shell, and server), `packages/` for shared core packages, `ee/` for the control plane, `evals/` for executable test specs, `worlds/` for declarative dev/test environments, `docs/`, and `.opencode/skills/` for repository agent skills. Testing is done via `evals/specs/**/*.test.ts` files, with app-driving journeys using `.e2e.test.ts`. Development commands include `pnpm dev` for the Electron app and `pnpm dev:worktree` for multiple worktrees. A headless web mode is available for running the UI in a browser without Electron, with detailed instructions for setup and sign-in.
