About this project
Vinext is an alternative Next.js-compatible toolchain built on Vite rather than a fork of Next.js or an adapter for `next build` output. Its Vite plugin detects `app/` or `pages/` directories and loads `next.config.js`, supporting both the App Router and Pages Router.
Documented capabilities include React Server Components, Server Actions, route handlers, middleware, SSR and client hydration, static generation, ISR, `output: "export"`, standalone Node.js output, and commonly used modules such as `next/link`, `next/image`, `next/navigation`, `next/headers`, `next/cache`, and the Metadata API. The project targets Next.js 16.x and does not focus on deprecated APIs from older versions.
The README states that vinext is under active development and is not yet a complete drop-in replacement. Known compatibility gaps include incomplete Cache Components and Partial Prerendering behavior, limited build-time image and font optimization, native-module failures in App Router development for packages such as `sharp` and `satori`, ignored `preferredRegion`, and some advanced or recently introduced Next.js semantics. Users are advised to run `vinext check` before migrating.
New projects can be created with `create-vinext-app`; existing projects can be migrated with `vinext init`. The migration command checks compatibility, installs dependencies, adjusts selected configuration for ESM, adds scripts, prompts for a deployment target, and generates the appropriate Vite and platform configuration without removing the original Next.js setup. Manual setup uses the `vinext()` Vite plugin, `vite dev`, `vite build`, and `vinext start`. An optional Agent Skill can guide migration through supported AI coding tools.
Cloudflare Workers has the deepest integration. `@vinext/cloudflare deploy` builds and deploys applications, while bindings such as D1, R2, KV, Durable Objects, AI, Queues, Vectorize, and Browser Rendering are accessed through `env` from `cloudflare:workers`. The integration also covers cache adapters, request-time image optimization, response caching, and optional cache pre-warming. Standalone Node output can be started from `dist/standalone/server.js`. Other platforms, including Vercel, Netlify, AWS, Deno Deploy, and Azure, can be targeted through the Nitro Vite plugin.
The project reports more than 1,700 Vitest tests and 380 Playwright end-to-end tests, including tests derived from Next.js and OpenNext conformance suites, but recommends careful evaluation before production use.
