Celluloid is a GTK+ desktop frontend for mpv, using the libmpv client API to expose mpv playback capabilities through a simpler graphical interface. It was previously known as GNOME MPV. Media can be opened from command-line arguments, a file chooser, an Open Location dialog, or drag-and-drop. The playlist, hidden by default, can be toggled with F9 and supports adding files or URIs, reordering items, removing selected entries, and expanding playlist files or online playlists into individual items. Configuration is available through a preferences dialog and dconf, while mpv-specific settings can be supplied through an mpv.conf file, an Extra MPV Options field, or command-line options using an mpv- prefix. Celluloid can also run most mpv Lua user scripts, installed through the Plugins preferences tab, and supports custom keybindings using mpv's input.conf syntax. The project documents build and runtime requirements including GTK, libadwaita, GLib, gdk-pixbuf, mpv, and epoxy, with optional Lua and youtube-dl support. Installation is available through distribution packages, Flatpak on Flathub, Snap, and source builds using Meson and Ninja. Translations are coordinated through Weblate. The project does not accept AI-generated code and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3 or later.
