Cap is an open-source screen recording application designed as an alternative to Loom. It allows users to capture their screen, camera, and microphone, and share recordings via links or export them as video files. The platform features two primary recording modes: Instant Mode, which uploads while recording for immediate sharing, and Studio Mode, which records locally and provides a polished editor with backgrounds, zooms, trimming, and captions. Cap supports team collaboration through comments, reactions, transcripts, and viewer analytics. It includes AI capabilities to automatically generate titles, summaries, clickable chapters, captions, and transcripts. Users can import existing Loom videos into their Cap library. The tool emphasizes data ownership, allowing users to utilize Cap Cloud, connect their own S3-compatible storage (AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, MinIO, Wasabi), or fully self-host the platform using Docker Compose. Desktop applications are available for macOS and Windows, alongside a web dashboard for managing and viewing recordings. The codebase is structured as a Turborepo monorepo utilizing Rust, TypeScript, Tauri, SolidStart, Next.js, and MySQL.
