About this project
BookWyrm is a decentralized social network designed for tracking reading activity, writing book reviews, discussing literature, and discovering new books. Built on the ActivityPub protocol, it supports federation, allowing users to interact across different instances and with other ActivityPub services like Mastodon and Pleroma. This architecture supports small, autonomous communities that can choose their own moderation and federation rules, contrasting with monolithic platforms like Goodreads.
Key features include composing reviews, commenting, posting quotes, tracking books read and want to read, and configuring privacy and moderation settings. Technically, BookWyrm utilizes a Django web backend with PostgreSQL, Celery for task queuing, and Redis for activity stream management and task backend. The frontend uses Django templates, the Bulma CSS framework, and vanilla JavaScript. Deployment is facilitated via Docker and docker-compose, utilizing Gunicorn as the web runner, Nginx as the HTTP server, and Flower for Celery monitoring. Official documentation provides instructions for both developer and production environments, and the project welcomes contributions from non-programmers as well as developers.
