About this project

Astroquery is an astropy-affiliated Python package that collects tools for accessing online astronomical data. Each web service is wrapped in its own sub-package, so users import only the modules they need. For example, the simbad sub-package provides a Simbad class whose query_object method returns a table of results for a named object. The package requires Python 3.10 or later and astropy 5.0 or later. It can be installed from PyPI, including pre-release versions, and optional dependency groups such as [all], [docs] and [test] are available. A development version can also be installed directly from GitHub. Importing astroquery alone provides little; individual sub-modules must be imported explicitly. The documentation lists the available services, and the API page describes the standard tools shared by most modules, such as query_object and query_region. Bugs and feature requests go through the project issue tracker, and code contributions are welcomed, with contributors encouraged to follow the API and contributing guidelines. Users are asked to cite the paper published in The Astronomical Journal; the BibTeX entry is available from the package itself via astroquery.__citation__. Separate Zenodo DOIs exist for individual versions. The project is maintained by Adam Ginsburg and Brigitta Sipőcz.
